Context
The Sundarbans stretch across the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, shared between India and Bangladesh. On the Indian side, islands of farming and fishing villages sit behind earthen embankments, with the mangrove forest as their first line of defence.
Here the whole water continuum is visible in one landscape. Rain and rivers bring freshwater, tides bring salt. Ponds hold drinking water, and mangroves hold the coast. When cyclones breach an embankment, salt reaches all of them at once.
That is why the Sundarbans are Planet Mama's anchor landscape. Mangrove restoration, safe water, sanitation and blue carbon are designed here as one programme, not four.
